The committee met in person at Halifax City Hall on Thursday to discuss a list of information reports that were deferred from a council meeting earlier this month.

The problem Mason is trying to solve is one familiar to anyone who walks around the urban areas of Halifax Regional Municipality: you get to an intersection just as the light is turning green, and even though you press the button, it’s too late to change the pedestrian signal. That means you have to wait for the full cycle of the light to legally cross the street, even though the light is green.

At Thursday’s meeting, Coun. Shawn Cleary echoed Mason’s concerns.
Cleary argued the inconsistency of the buttons — having them perform different functions at every intersection — is creating confusion.

“They’re either pushing at every single intersection because they don’t know they’re not supposed to or don’t have to, or they don’t push at any intersection and then they’re walking when they don’t actually have a walk signal … and they should be able to walk and have the priority because pedestrians should have the priority over cars at an intersection.”

So I think, fundamentally, having the beg buttons, doesn’t that make the pedestrian less safe?

Koutroulakis said it wouldn’t be easy.

He said every intersection is different, but replacing pedestrian push buttons with accessible pedestrian push buttons would cost up to $12,000 per intersection.

The motion passed unanimously.

And after a discussion around traffic-calming, Anguish agreed come to this year’s budget discussions with another list of school zones eligible for speed humps.

At some intersections, using the button results in a longer green, allowing time to cross. If using buttons to get the walk signal is eliminated, some red lights will be slightly longer, and that would conflict with the traffic authority’s obsession with speeding car travel in the city.

When you push the button, the cars ALWAYS get to go first. Why is that?? I am not saying that pedestrians should always go first, but could we not have this on an alternating basis?
