September 2, 2016ByRussell Gragg3 Comments

This week we speak with Rhiannon Makohoniuk, the Dalhousie Student Union’s Vice-President Internal, about the university’s decision not to fully fund the nascent Sexual Assault Hotline. The university claims that, based on a report they won’t release to the public, the partial funding they offered was adequate. But who needs safe students when you can send billionaires […]

The Yarmouth ferry: a review

August 27, 2016ByTim Bousquet5 Comments

I took the ferry from Yarmouth to Portland Wednesday. The boat departs at 8:30am, but you’re required to be there by 7:30am, so realistically that means overnighting in Yarmouth. I had hoped to explore Yarmouth a bit Tuesday, but didn’t arrive until 7:30pm, so after checking in at the Lakelawn Hotel, I only had time […]

How safe is cycling?

A personal look at the risks and benefits of riding in the city

August 23, 2016ByErica Butler10 Comments

Everyone’s transportation choices are made based on a unique set of factors: where you live vs where you need to be on a regular basis; how much (or little) money you have to burn; what kind of cargo you normally have in tow; what kind of physical challenges you do or don’t have; etc. Me, […]

Legal conference wrestles with online privacy and cyber bullying

July 27, 2016ByJennifer Henderson1 Comment

Some six billion videos a day are posted to Snapchat –a social media platform used by 77 per cent of college students — and posts to Facebook exceed three million a minute, so it’s questionable whether anything is truly private anymore. Or can be legally protected. But online privacy is the topic at the heart of […]

Twinning study looks at how we can pay, not whether we should

For a fraction of twinning costs, we could establish affordable long distance bus and rail options for Nova Scotians

July 20, 2016ByErica Butler8 Comments

The province has released the first phase of their privately contracted feasibility study into the further twinning of highways in Nova Scotia. The gist: twinning is enormously expensive, and way out of our financial reach unless we change the way we fund roads, probably by introducing more tolls. Just have a look at this infographic […]
