Is congestion pricing part of our transportation solution?

Things like cordon tolls could address "fundamental issue of misaligned incentives" says report

August 30, 2016ByErica Butler

There’s an oft-cited though oft-ignored truth in transportation planning. I like to express it in Field of Dreams terms: if you build it, they will come. When faced with clogged roads, we often respond by building more road capacity, if we can afford it. But after incurring the debt required to build more vehicle lanes,...

A Halifax Transit bus driver left his job Friday after being accused of child luring; the same driver was one of two drivers accused of child luring two years ago

August 15, 2016ByTim Bousquet4 Comments

A Halifax Transit bus driver left his job Friday after being accused of child luring. The same driver was one of two drivers accused of child luring two years ago; in that instance, an investigation by Halifax Transit was ended because it was inconclusive. The recent accusation came after a self-described “creep catcher” named Reggie Cameron posted a […]

Four questions about the new transit plan

Some things to consider on the eve of council's discussion of the MFT plan.

April 11, 2016ByErica Butler5 Comments

The Moving Forward Together plan goes before council at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, starting at 10am. On the eve of what promises to be a long, and hopefully lively discussion, I’m asking four questions about our new transit plan: Is Halifax Transit missing an opportunity to weigh in on the future of transit in Halifax? […]

Metro Transit fuel spill: $2.7 million lost but no accountability

May 20, 2015ByTim Bousquet

Halifax Auditor General Larry Munroe today issued his report on the Metro Transit fuel spill. The jaw-dropping details: ➡ In April, 2014, a car dealership on Windmill Road noticed oil in a drainage ditch, and immediately called Halifax Water, which in turn promptly investigated. ➡ Workers traced the fuel back to a ditch next to Halifax...

Halifax Transit’s overtime costs are exploding

March 17, 2015ByTim Bousquet

Overtime costs at Metro Transit are exploding. In the 2013/4 budget year, the transit system paid out $5,258,90 in overtime — a whopping 13.7 percent increase from the year before. Recall that the 42-day strike in February 2012 was largely about management demands for reducing labour costs. “The wage increases [offered by the city to the union] would be offset...

It’s More Than Buses: a great starting point

September 19, 2014ByTim Bousquet

The It’s More Than Buses group has released its proposal for revamping Halifax bus routes and scheduling. At the heart of the proposal are high-frequency routes that connect at transfer points. The buses would run along these routes so often—at least every 15 minutes, with some at 10 minutes—that it reduces the need for time-consuming...

Uncover: Dead Wrong

In 1995, Brenda Way was brutally murdered behind a Dartmouth apartment building. In 1999, Glen Assoun was found guilty of the murder. He served 17 years in prison, but steadfastly maintained his innocence. In 2019, Glen Assoun was fully exonerated.

Halifax Examiner founder and investigative journalist Tim Bousquet has followed the story of Glen Assoun's wrongful conviction for over five years. Now, Bousquet tells that story as host of Season 7 of the CBC podcast series Uncover: Dead Wrong.
