March 23, 2015ByTim Bousquet2 Comments

News Views Government On campus Noticed In the harbour Footnotes News 1. Cleanup continues The city’s response to Wednesday’s massive snow storm has been remarkably thorough and fast, considering the gargantuan task at hand. I’ve been impressed with the massive deconstruction projects all over town, as snow banks are dismantled and trucked off. Which begs the […]

Just four unaffiliated people show up for Dal student government debate

2015年3月21日ByMoira Donovan.

It often seems that no one, including students, take student government seriously. In the 2014 Dalhousie Student Union (DSU) elections, only 1,828 students out of roughly 18,500 voted; that’s less than 11 per cent of the student body. An all-candidates debate, which was really more of an audience led Q&A, held for this year’s DSU...

High tuition rates at the heart of Ryan Millet’s decision

March 19, 2015ByMoira Donovan.

As the Dalhousie Dentistry scandal limps towards something of a conclusion, the treatment of “whistleblower” Ryan Millet has been a source of outrage and mistrust of the university’s administration. Like the other 12 students in the Facebook group, Millet was ultimately allowed to return to clinic, but was suspended for longer than the others because...

Halifax Transit’s overtime costs are exploding

March 17, 2015ByTim Bousquet

Overtime costs at Metro Transit are exploding. In the 2013/4 budget year, the transit system paid out $5,258,90 in overtime — a whopping 13.7 percent increase from the year before. Recall that the 42-day strike in February 2012 was largely about management demands for reducing labour costs. “The wage increases [offered by the city to the union] would be offset...

The Tideline, with Tara Thorne

A young white woman with long blonde hair, wet and slicked back, wearing a top made of jeweled straps and long white fingernails.

Episode 69 of The Tideline, with Tara Thorne, is published.

March 8 marks International Women’s Day, and Music Nova Scotia has put together a day of programming topped by a huge live show at the Marquee. Pop artist Izra Fitch is on that lineup, and she stops by the show to talk about her gradual and full acceptance of the genre she loves (and loves to play), the women who inspire her, the evolution of her stage act, and that time she was Tara’s student. Plus Dana Beeler from MNS phones in to chat about why this day remains important to a certain sector of its membership.

Uncover: Dead Wrong

In 1995, Brenda Way was brutally murdered behind a Dartmouth apartment building. In 1999, Glen Assoun was found guilty of the murder. He served 17 years in prison, but steadfastly maintained his innocence. In 2019, Glen Assoun was fully exonerated.

Halifax Examiner founder and investigative journalist Tim Bousquet has followed the story of Glen Assoun's wrongful conviction for over five years. Now, Bousquet tells that story as host of Season 7 of the CBC podcast series Uncover: Dead Wrong.
