November 24, 2014ByTim Bousquet1 Comment

News 1. #YouKnowHerName A trial starts today for an Eastern Passage man charged in the euphemistically named “high-profile child pornography case.” Five days have been set aside for the trial, but there’s some expectation that the man will simply plead guilty and that will be the end of it. The first man tried in the case […]

News 1. Jail release Some un-specified “corrective action” will be taken against jail staff for mistakenly releasing some guy accused of viciously attacking an old man instead of some guy facing minor charges. “Correctional officers at the appropriate points in the discharge process did not verify the offender’s identity prior to release,” reads the stunningly obvious one-page […]

She died the next day. Holly was a spirited, smart woman working for the province as she finished a degree program at Dalhousie. She […]

It’s unlikely that Nova Scotian kids were given tampered Halloween candy

November 18, 2014ByTim Bousquet

Six separate cases of tampered Halloween candy have been reported in Nova Scotia this year. But based on the information I have collected from police, I conclude that the reports are very likely false. This would not at all be uncommon. Snopes, the website dedicated to debunking or confirming urban myths and internet rumours, has for years collected reports of...

Serious men in hats: Halifax council preview, November 18, 2014 meeting

November 17, 2014ByTim Bousquet

Rec centres This issue is quite complicated, and I’ll probably have more to say about it after the meeting. The short of it is this: HRM adopted a policy for rec centres in 1997. Big rec centres that serve large areas would be paid for directly from the city’s general fund, but community rec centres,...

Floating in a most peculiar way: Morning File, Monday, November 17, 2014

November 17, 2014ByTim Bousquet6 Comments

News 1. Bottomless pit The Halifax Security Forum is a black hole, so far sucking up $10 million in federal government support, with no sign of realistically ever getting off the government teat. “The government says the investment is well worth it and brings significant attention to Halifax. Delegates from five dozen countries are scheduled […]

Uncover: Dead Wrong

In 1995, Brenda Way was brutally murdered behind a Dartmouth apartment building. In 1999, Glen Assoun was found guilty of the murder. He served 17 years in prison, but steadfastly maintained his innocence. In 2019, Glen Assoun was fully exonerated.

Halifax Examiner founder and investigative journalist Tim Bousquet has followed the story of Glen Assoun's wrongful conviction for over five years. Now, Bousquet tells that story as host of Season 7 of the CBC podcast series Uncover: Dead Wrong.
