Department of Environment fails to provide legally required annual review

August 1, 2014ByTim Bousquet

In 2007, the Nova Scotian legislature passed an ambitious piece of legislation called the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act, EGSPA, which is called “eggs-puh” in wonk circles. EGSPA was spearheaded by then-Environment Minister Mark Parent, a preacher turned politician who represents the best of the old-school of the Progressive Conservative party. Parent parented EGSPA, pushing the...

August 1, 2014ByTim Bousquet3 Comments

News 1. Trade Centre Limited is hemorrhaging money Yesterday, the province released the public accounts for the 2013/2014 fiscal year, which ended on March 31. The financials could keep curious reporters busy for months (see below), but of highest interest is the performance of Trade Centre Limited, the crown corporation that runs the convention centre and […]

News 1. Northern Pulp Mill is a stinking mess The Chronicle Herald reports that mill emissions have become unbearable for residents of Pictou this year, and no technical solution will be implemented until May. July 30, 2014ByTim Bousquet

The take away news from yesterday’s council meeting is that the Forum and Centennial Arenas were saved, a new Dartmouth 4-pad arena will be constructed, and four other single ice pad arenas will be closed: Lebrun, Devonshire, Gray, and Bowles. But before getting into those specifics, the whys and the wherefores, let’s step back and...

More vacant than usual: Morning File, Wednesday, July 30, 2014

July 30, 2014ByTim Bousquet4 Comments

News 1. The Forum is saved I’ll have more on this in a council recap later today, but the short of it is that Halifax council yesterday rejected a staff proposal to “dispose of” the Forum and build a new four-pad arena at CFB. Instead, council agreed with the Halifax Forum Community Association’s proposal to build a […]

Lazy journalism: Morning File, Tuesday, July 29, 2014

July 29, 2014ByTim Bousquet4 Comments

News 1. The CBC publishes a weasely, unfair, untrue, and sensationalist attack on workers CBC filed a Freedom of Information request for details about provincial employees’ sick days, which is fair enough: a thorough look at employee health is a proper journalistic subject. But the resulting article is framed unfairly. “Nova Scotia government workers some of the […]

Eastern passage development, Khyber & Forum: Halifax council preview, July 29, 2014 meeting

July 28, 2014ByTim Bousquet

Money Dexter construction awards I’ve been keeping an on-going chronicle of tenders awarded to Dexter Construction. I am not implying that there is anything improper in these awards, but rather I’m just pointing out how very much public money they receive, far more than any other company. This week $1,122,638.79 for the replacement of curbs...

See Africville coverage here, here, and here, and Pride coverage here, here, and here. Stoo Metz, a professional photographer, was on the last float in the Pride parade, and as it turned […]

Review of investigation into Holly Bartlett’s death criticizes Halifax police actions

July 25, 2014ByTim Bousquet

A review of the Halifax police investigation into the death of Holly Bartlett finds that “based on the evidence presented to the reviewers,” her death was accidental. The report, however, goes on to fault the police department’s investigation, noting that the investigating officers jumped to a conclusion early on, before collecting all the evidence, and then kept...

Uncover: Dead Wrong

In 1995, Brenda Way was brutally murdered behind a Dartmouth apartment building. In 1999, Glen Assoun was found guilty of the murder. He served 17 years in prison, but steadfastly maintained his innocence. In 2019, Glen Assoun was fully exonerated.

Halifax Examiner founder and investigative journalist Tim Bousquet has followed the story of Glen Assoun's wrongful conviction for over five years. Now, Bousquet tells that story as host of Season 7 of the CBC podcast series Uncover: Dead Wrong.
