News 1. Is a “climate action tax” different from any other tax? Halifax has a climate action plan that Zane Woodford has previously described as “woefully underfunded.” Council is thinking of changing that, by earmarking a special tax of 0.023 cents on every $100 of taxable assessed residential property value for climate-related capital projects. But, […]

October 17, 2020ByZane Woodford1 Comment

Just two years after guys named Steve outnumbered women on regional council, Haligonians have opted for near gender parity. At least seven women were elected to serve as councillors in Halifax Regional Municipality for the next four years, according to unofficial election results tallied Saturday night. Just after 11 p.m., Halifax announced it wouldn’t be […]

Halifax council candidate questionnaires: District 10 — Halifax-Bedford Basin West

September 29, 2020ByZane Woodford1 Comment

With Coun. Russell Walker stepping aside after 27 years, the race for District 10 has attracted eight candidates. Walker only scraped by in 2016, winning the district — including Fairview, Rockingham and part of Clayton Park — with 35 votes. The runner-up, Andrew Curran, is on the ballot again, and so is the third-place finisher, […]

The Tideline, with Tara Thorne

Episode 71 of The Tideline, with Tara Thorne, is published.

Amy Sherman-Palladino is both a thrilling and confounding creator of television — best known for Gilmore Girls, she also helmed a single season of the much-missed Bunheads, and has seen the biggest success of her long television career with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a 1950s-set series starring Rachel Brosnahan as an upscale New York woman who becomes a (gasp!) stand-up comedian. Tara is joined by her friends Denise Williams and Holly Gordon for a dissection of the just-aired fourth season, including all the Gilmore universe people who showed up (some VERY unwelcome), Susie’s sexuality, ASP’s blind spots as a writer, production budgets, and that time they were spoiled for Gilmore by the Warner Brothers studio tour. Plus a new song from Don Brownrigg!

Uncover: Dead Wrong

In 1995, Brenda Way was brutally murdered behind a Dartmouth apartment building. In 1999, Glen Assoun was found guilty of the murder. He served 17 years in prison, but steadfastly maintained his innocence. In 2019, Glen Assoun was fully exonerated.

Halifax Examiner founder and investigative journalist Tim Bousquet has followed the story of Glen Assoun's wrongful conviction for over five years. Now, Bousquet tells that story as host of Season 7 of the CBC podcast series Uncover: Dead Wrong.
